Venice, 1939. In oily water of channels Mussolini's portraits are reflected. Elderly professor-art critic Nino loves the young wife Theresa, but doctors have forbidden him to have sex. Theresa dreams of young Laszlo, but isn't ready to admit to the husband. Nino finds ways to give to the wife pleasure and writes down the thoughts in the diary, leaving a key in a visible place. The wife hosts his game and answers the same. Their daughter Lisa, Laszlo's bride, reads both diaries.
